Spencer James has worked in the media for nearly thirty years and been broadcasting for over two decades.
His passion started in television, where he worked as a first assistant director on a couple of short films, one of them BAFTA nominated. It was at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth that radio took over: he began as a presenter and worked his way up to Programme Manager while completing a degree in Film and Television. A summer job abroad after graduating turned into three years helping run a station, and back in the UK he spent a spell at AA Roadwatch as one of the "flying eyes", reporting traffic from a small aeroplane over north London, Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
Since then he has been programming controller for the UK's first bi-lingual student radio station, Production and Promotions Manager for one of Spain's biggest English-language radio networks, and a drive time and breakfast host across the south east of England.
In spring 2008 he had the idea of a chart show for stations broadcasting to expatriates, and The eXpat Chart was born. It outgrew that name within three years, and at the start of 2013 became Airplay40, now one of the most widely syndicated chart shows in the world.
Away from the microphone he can be found cheering on the England rugby team, failing to hit a golf ball where he intended, and experimenting in the kitchen with varying degrees of success.
